Can I use tracks from an external drive?

I only have a 16gb iPad and want to be able to access tracks from an external drive be it a sd card, hdd, usb stick. Is this possible?
I am using camera connection kit for external sound card so not sure if this matters. Maybe a wireless drive or a nas?
