Laptop ground issues - another fix

If you here a muffled rumbling sound, this is surely a ground problem. This happens with laptops that have a power supply with a ground connection (3 pin plugs). The problem will stop if you unplug your laptop. Since you can't always DJ on battery mode, you need to get rid of the ground connection by using an adapter of this sort :

Also, instead of getting rid of the ground connection and leaving a potential for problems, your local electronics store should carry another solution: a ground loop isolator.

Image

Directions for use: plug the ground loop isolator into mixer out, then plug in your red/white cables into the isolator.

Mixer out > ground loop isolator > speaker red/white cables.

Didn't see that posted on the FAQ, not sure how useful this is. :D

Ah yeah, how could I forget.

Price range: $15 - 20 USD
Stores: Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's, Radio Shack (I checked each of their websites for availability/price). Basically any major retailer in your area that specializes in electronics.

I just use two travel adaptors to bypass the ground...or just get a travel power supply for your laptop for other countries, then stick on an adaptor for your country on it works a treat.

The only thing with that though, is (don't quote me on this, I'm not an electrician) wouldn't it leave the potential to cause harm to your computer if it is ungrounded?

in theory, maybe. but in reality, laptops are mainly plastic a conductor. Laptops have travel power supplys. How come using a laptop in another country or country with no ground doesn't kill people? If you are really unsure, then my advice don't do it. But i do it. Lots of people do it. Its personal choice. Its like the problem with record wear, some people just take the risk with needles, settings and stuff because at the end of the day there is always pros and cons, if you want to play safe, then don't bypass ground, set your needles at precise height and weight, use an s arm turntable etc.

But if you are willing to risk, record wear, needle wear, sound quality, and electric shocks in the name of music, making music and being part of the art of djing, then bypass ground ;)

lol, that was deep :P

Those are good points lazy, I tend to stay away from messing with electricity since I'd hate to have $1000 go to waste. But that's just because I don't know a whole lot about it.

This is sometimes really hard to find some on Internet.

For french audience, I finally suceed ot find some on http://www.priceminister.com/offer/buy/6429127/Isolation-de-masse-Sonorisation-Automobile.html

However please note, I didn't test them !
In the past, I was using Direct Injection Box with ground loop isolation function built in. That's saved my life many times!
