Recording problem

Postby joelbrown31 on 27 Mar 2011, 16:24

Hi,
I have a U-Mix44 soundcard and am trying to record through the program audacity. I have searched on this forum and read the posts . I understand there is a way of recording by running a cable from the booth of the mixer to the mic input of my laptop. The problem is the sound i get on playback is a very low distorted crackle and i cant hear the song..
Is this a problem anyone else has experienced, or am i doing something wrong?
thanks in advance

Hey,

You put the cable of the booth or master 2 output of your mixer into the Micro-In of your laptop? Or is it also an Line-In?

When it is a micro in, this can't go well because the AD is often not the best one because for microphone you don't need those quality like Line in or line out.

Christian

sounds like your inputsignal is too hot.

turn down the master on your mixer and check in window´s soundoptions if the signal is still distorting,
usually recording in a PC´s line-input shouldnt be a problem unless your signal is too hot.

not completely true, it´s due to the very different impedances of line and mic. Basically it´s like plugging in a line source into a phono input.
(yes, mic and phono do have about the same impedance)

cheers

Hi guys thanks for replying
I am running the lead from the "booth" output of my mixer to the mic input of my laptop.
I have turned the master level on my mixer down , but then audacity doesn't pick up any sound at all. When the mixer is at full volume I can hear it slightly but very distorted.
thanks for the help

check in the systempreferences for sound.

control panel->sound etc.->audio-devices

there you should be able to set the input/outputgain
for your mic in. also try to set the gain in audacity, and you also might try a simpler recorder than audacity.
just google audio-recorder ;)

Uncheck mic amp or gain on the audio panel for your computer input.

Hi, before you start to use Audacity to record audio from microphone that is inputed on laptop, you need to set it well. Also, when you set stereo mix sound device on your laptop, you might find a streaming audio recorder and use it to record audio. It is said to be simple.

There is one big difference with audacy it's not a free-ware the price is 26 € VAT included in the European union. But it does very well the job as an easy streaming recorder. tested & approved as efficient & useful.
