Hey,
is it a new macbook pro? (2011 Model)
If so you probably wanna boot in 32-Bit mode, by holding down "2" and "3" while start up.
This can help with some issues (Apple screwed some things big this time...)

Edit: I didnt saw that you were running 10.5.8, so this wont help you anyway i guess. But still should you check in the systemprefs what it says for kernel-extensions.
