If you are using Ubuntu the I can recommend jack (sudo apt-get install jack) for using it with external audio interfaces. I have not tried it because my ubuntu laptop is just for surfing, but a friend of mine is using the esi u46 DJ with jack on debian (which is quite the same as ubuntu

) and it works pretty good. I am also not that deep into jack to give you a detailed setup and configuration info but I hope and guess that there are a lot of good sources in the internet.
