It sounds like to me that you are hearing the timecode though the Monitor channels of you sound card, it's easy to sort out.

Open up your soundcard control panel and can you either mute the Monitor channels (1&2, 3&4) or turn them right down (using the sliders, I suppose)

Try Cross again and see if you can hear the noise.

If you use the software without the external control how is it ?

I give up and will be selling this piece of kit asap. I appreciate my laptop is at the low end of the specifications but it is after all within the required spec so should work.

Having the spec is one thing, having a system that can handle real time audio is another.
You need to clean/optimize your setup.
