What about a Spotify integration?

Postby Mellowax on 26 Mar 2016, 01:46

I think it is about time to implement the accessibility of the Spotify library to users. djay provides it as well for some time now, but they unfortunately do not have vinyl compatibility...

Who needs spotify integration? It's not legal to use for DJ-ing outside your bedroom anyway!

More sense would make something like Serato just introduced, integration with Pulselocker INCLUDING license to use when playing a gig or offline use of PL tracks!

Though not a bad idea there always is the risk of tracks being missing after a while for whatever reason. Also depending on an Internet connection isn't free from issues at various locations.

Well..

as I am more kind of like a Home-DJ and do have an internet-connection as well as a Spotify account, I would really appreciate this feature. I am managing my playlists all there and it was some serious fun playing around with my Playlists through djay.

I am with you, that it is not legal to do live gigs with this feature, but I also don't believe, that a software is to be held responsible for what the users do with it. If I play for a crowd and I use burned CDs, it's also illegal - but who else is responsible than the DJ himself?

You may find it a user responsibility, which basically is right.. However some of the sales channels may think differently when lawyers start sending letters...
Even the initial response letter will cost a lot of money.

Soundcloud can be seen as a good example of what can happen..

Sorry, I did not get what happened with Soundcloud? I just bought Cross some days ago, before I used MixVibes DVS 6.

But I really wonder then how djay for instance is able to use full official Spotify integration. This software can be used for professional DJing as well, as it supports many controllers...

I think you're getting confused by the many support For controllers and the legal matter of using it professionally, if I'm not mistaken the only streaming add on you can legally use for professional djing @ this moment is pullslocker ;)

All other streaming add-ons are just for bedroom djing or for exploring new tunes In your mixing !

Correct me if I'm wrong ;)

Soundcloud owners were threatened to have to pay millions.

By changing the site rules they've been able to reduce this, but overall had significant costs.

Other software may make a different choice as the technical part likely isn't the hardest. Though Cross basically is designed to use full tracks in memory working with streams is possible.

Actually that depends on the country. In the United States for example it is legal to do this. In the United States all you need is a "public performance license" for the venue (or if you are a mobile DJ you need a public performance license yourself). Once your venue has a license you can play Spotify tracks all you want.

So I don't think you should slam a potential feature just because your copyright laws suck, you should be fixing your copyright laws.
