  :?: know that certain formats are used in recording files,,also understand that there are file converters out there for such a thing, curious are there plans to have the option to record files in the mp3 format ,or would this be to much excess baggage in the software :?: :?: :?:

Something rights related I guess that needs some fees/royalties.

Isn't LAME Encoder open source and/or free for all?

Rights are expensive (about 1.5€) per software.
Who own the rights? That's confused.

@Daniel: You can try razorlame with the lame encoder. Don't worry, german sites, also work in the US ;) You only have to show razorlame where the 'lame_enc.dll' installed by the Lame encoder is located on your hard disk. Afterwards you can import your recorded wav from Cross in razorlame and encode it to MP3. From what I have heard iTunes can do that too, maybe easier, I have not used iTunes for years ;)

I have a though to this topic.

Wav is the same format that used on CD-s (only CD-s use it with 4 times more data redundancy, to make tha data restorable if the CD get damaged).

Wav is a so simple format, that It does not require complex drivers to encode and record.

Not the same at .mp3-s.
Mp3 coding is a bit resource using, and needs on-the-fly conversion of the data, (witch does filtering non needed frequencies, sampling and compressing the sound), witch means more than 100ms between the sound playing and writing on the HDD, and it is also has a lot of settings, that make it difficult to set for proper operation.

Conversion is easyer than you think.

-Open winamp
-Put the recorded file to the playlist
- Right click on the record
- then choose "Send to" and then "format converter"
- Choose mp3 on the drop-down list
- Set up quality, etc. (and check "Use old file name and path")
- Click ok
THERE U GO :)

i think folks who dont have the encoder program(s) will like the option because sometimes u just wanna get it done on the spot instead of looking for programs, etc. also for those that use mp3 anyway that would be a great look too  everyone is happy! i mean u have flac, aiff, wav, ogg, it would only make sense, but i wouldnt want to take away from the stability of the program u know?
