[EN] Cross: 2nd autogain-algo or new ;)

Postby Hannes on 25 Nov 2011, 14:29

I know it´s an old and boring story and we´ve discussed a lot,

but nonetheless i´d like to ask for a new or optional (wink, wink Syl ;))
auto-gain algorithm which strictly calculates by peak and sets it the gain to -1db according to the highest peak of the track.

I know this would mean using the actual-mixer gain again, but imho the current auto-gain is just no good enough for music asides dance-stuff thats highly compressed/limited, ending up with crazy gain set.

Different Idea ;)

Would it be possible to have Cross apply +- from the calculated gains.
Something like [-x] and Cross would lower all gains by that value.

cheers

  just trying to get a clear idea of what not to your liking,, (wrong phrase)understand that the auto gain does throw the levels out of wack, saw that in the first update , and noticed improvment in the 7.0,,just curious if this is a issue due to the fact that if you get your gains set to your liking /usability and for what ever reason they revert back to Cross adjusted settings, then this would be annoying, down right counter productive   noticed that after gains are set(Cross auto gain) that if you try to adjust them they wont get to 0 using incremental control of the software(gain pan) i think the first work around that will satify most is to have the gain (also any other settings ) stay as altered in the software   you in your experience have encountered this difference in quality /ie sound differences in different types of media, and have adjusted for it,understand that one set of variables cant control unlimited set of variables.. not shure of a solution,

the auto-gain does very good now.
(it only sometimes fails for tracks with much bass, but less mids)

the reason i´m asking for this is simple:

if you dont use the limiter, you need to have the gains set to at least
-4db otherwise it´ll distort when cueing/scratching.

i just want maximum dynamics and am just not a big fan of limiters when most tracks are already limited like crazy.

 so what you would like is to be able to have auto gain adjust them and minus 4db off of adjusted gain   how would that affect the track that are right on and not nessary to be adjusted with the minus 4db adjustment.  switchable/selectable,,,i think the best solution is to have the settings that are reconfigured in Cross stay where they are put weather by software or user untill they are altered by user,, if the same track is altered minuse 4 db for scratching and is not used for that purpose and is mixed with a track that has not been adjusted for the minus 4db then to transtion good something will havve to be adjusted  not to downplay the idea, too many variables ,even without the variable of user preference

even if the track is fine calculated -> not clipping in playback wih a reasonable gain-level set, it´ll clip when scatching with the limiter off.

my workaround so far is to have everything set to -3,5db, but then output isnt even, as it´s not related to the calculated gain anymore.

you understand daniel?

   was going to ask you have you found a work around   have you considered using a music editor to get the track gain where you want them so that it is nailed to the music and Cross doesnt have to try to see and adjust it   since the major issue is with scratching and distortion, how would you control that variable.. :) :) dont take me wrong just trying to have conversation,my slight lack of info and experence hopefully will not hamper you intent to get a resolution

not at all daniel, i appreciate your concern

An seperate editor might help, shure, but i dont think this simple +- calculations can be so hard to implement, and also why need another program that potentially can cause problems. ;)

Why not give the devs some work

They get paid, i dont...

  got to move off to work  (gotta get paid) understand that the dev team might have more resources to solve this,, but the evental outcome is that your performance will be hampered and your pay, so any effort put in by yourself will eventualy benifit your pocket
