Awesome - thanks for doing that!

I'm going to give this a go as I've got a couple of spare hard drives from old PC's and it'll mean I can have my Trance stuff on one and my Pop/To 40 stuff on another and keep them completely separate.

Karma on it's way for your efforts!

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has used mixvibes on two machines using dropbox to store the analysis files? I have the same issue as the thread starter but would prefer to let the cloud do the work instead of a hard drive.

Thanks

The theory is that if you sync all properly and do not use the 2 PC's at the same time it may be OK.

For gigs it will be pretty risky. As hdd can be read with like 6gb and responsivenes less than 1ms an internet connection will not have this speed. Also the latency may cause trouble. Cross attempt to read the analyses file before the track is started.
So your system will loose significant responsiveness.

Thanks. It would be in a folder on my laptop, so I wouldn't be relying on an internet connection all the time, just for syncing the folder after changes. Would that still be an issue? I assume not as it's a folder just like the default one.

I wouldn't ever be using it on two machines at the same time.

If you use the same synced collection it might work.

It would be a matter of trying. The main problem may be a general sync issue which is the way the time stamp of the files are handled. Seems basic, but a lot of technical steps are included.

Do you have any reason to not use a direct sync option, so from PC<>laptop

I have a main workstation laptop and a gigging laptop and use Synkron (freeware) to sync mp3 files between the two, also copying the main database from the gig laptop in order to have all the necessary changes in playlists, song history etc. Works quite alright for me.

That's good to hear. Are the collections exactly the same on both machines? My setup is currently two different collections with a large proportion being the same tracks. I would be willing to make them identical though, if it meant I could jump between the two machines seamlessly.

Every analysis creates a unique file with a string ID. I don't know exactly how, but it seems time stamp related.
If you see file names (track names) in the folder than are result of old Cross versions.

So yes you need to have one Cross collection and keep track of your 'master'

Be sure to have the collection closed when you sync and wait for the journal to have closed. Else there is a (small) chance the journal and crossdb are out of sync.

This is not a seamless solution where you can jump between machines!
That just doesn't exist in this architecture. It's a tool foor convenience, but requires you to be aware which is your master.
Your analyses folder won't be much of a problem as worst case you sync track info that isn't actually in use. But the collection can only be synced as a single file, so if you work in both collections in between sync moments you will end with the collection which was closed latest...

And active sync isn't what you want as every change in the collection database would trigger a sync proces, which takes away CPU capacity and disk access time from your live performance.

Don't forget to make a backup of your collection and analysis files before you start using this. And store these safe, so preferably a different disk. It takes sync just seconds to completely mess up. As sometines you only find out the right settings after having experienced the wrong ones...

Thanks Ronald, I'll use those tips as a bible if I give it a go!

Yes, identical. Any changes in a file (edited ID tags, play count etc) will mean tracks will be replaced with 'newer' versions from my gig laptop which might take time if I haven't synchronized in a while. A very small nuisance though.
