Re: Gain normalization option?

I'll try it in other words: The Gain analysis sets a standard general volume for every track to be the same.

So if you load the tracks, don't touch any fader the 'computed' volume is the same.

Once you start touching controls to make adjustments the actual volume is no longer the computed volume. Cross does not adjust for this.
So the good thing is that you know that if you do certain adjustments for the one deck, you'll have to do similar for the other deck.

The computed volume is just a good start. To get out of a track the energy you want the actual volume and equalizing (and FX) determines how it is experienced by the crowd. All kind of quality factors like amplifiers, speakers, acoustics (absorption, echo,..) will determine the levels of adjustments needed.

I don't know the way Cross calculates gain change, so I can't say for sure about Cross, but in general:
1) Most gain levelling (be it as a separate tool or as part of DJ software) uses a very basic algorythm. Pretty much it will be "look at the loudest parts, see how loud it is compared to a set default, write the difference to the gain tag in mp3.
2) Gain tags in mp3 are not always read and/or used correctly by all DJ software or, for example, when playing MP3s on CDJs in a club.

That is why I suggest either manual work (and yes, autogain will do fine for background music where it's just wallpaper, agreed there) while actually playing live and/or using a high quality tool like Platinum notes that actually changes the track. If you play MP3s done by PN on a CDJ, the volumes will all be "the same".

PN looks at many more parameters when determining where and how to adapt gain. One of the things it does it keep an eye on the dynamics of a track too.

Greetinx.

p.s. I am just a simple moderator over at Digital DJ Tips forum and am in no way sponsored by Mixed in Key (the makers of Platinum Notes) :-D

I've used mp3gain for years.

Using programs like mp3gain (and the above mentioned) then you are not heavier reliant on the auto gain feature in most good DJ software.

Hope you don't mind me asking you a question. I got PN after gain issues and frustration. I'm still experiencing gain variations across a set list after processing all of the songs in PN. After looking at the values in the gain column in MV they are all different. I re-analysed the set list for gain only and the values still differ.

Should I set all to the same zero value in MV? I'm assuming so but thought it best to ask an expert first!

Thanks

I'm relying on the Cross result generally. Only if the track has longer silences (like at beginning or end) the calculated gain often is off.

If i'm right you need to diable 'Read track gain at load' to make use of the original track volume (which is rebalanced by PN in your case).
