What do you use to add video to a music track ?

I'm starting to play with the video feature of Cross 3. I'm looking to add video on my mp3/wav music track, first I just want to cut and past video from different sources and paste it on the music, for exemple part of the official clip, some lyric clip, or extract from movies, what software do you recommend (if possible a free one to start) ?
The next step would be to create video/animation for the music but I'm not ready for that now (I don't have enough knowledge and time now).
