I've used pretty much everything from Microsoft, including DOS 5.0, Windows 3, and nearly everything up from there, including the terrible Windows ME!
By far the best I've used is Windows 7 - well worth paying for! Close behind on my list is XP - it's still running great on my older desktop, and it runs Cross 2.0 almost as good as my new laptop.
I'd certainly recommend giving Win 7 a try if you can.
Then again, if you're looking for an excuse to buy a new PC, then go for it!
