i recently bought a U-Mix44 soundcard and it's working perfectly on windows xp. its fantastic by the way. i'm really hapy with it
i'd like to use it under linux, but when i plug it in the whole computer locks up and becomes unresponsive.
i tested it on ubuntu 10.10 with the latest kernel and most recent backported alsa a few days ago.
although i realise that linux is not officialy supported, but i'm sure that this isn't a huge problem to resolve, alsa loads the generic usb audio driver, but somewhere it gets stuck.
i know that right now there are a lot of people using linux who'd really apreciate a good timecode capable card with a working linux driver, especialy now that the maya44 is reaching the end of its production life.
i will also be submitting a detailed bug report to the alsa developers.
if you mixvibes guys are interested i can send you my dmesg log. and if i can help in any other way please let me know. thanks.

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 with a ESI U46 MK II without any problems and had it already runing with jack. Unfortunately I do not own a U-Mix44 ... :-( Do you want to stick to 10.10? If not I would suggest to update to 11.04. If you do not want to update to 11.04 you should at least install every update! This is possible too and if you are able to post a demsg log you know how to do so If you already did not. Otherwise I am running out of ideas. Cheers, Steve

Sorry but I can not help you this time :-( I am using the U46 which has a switch for each input channel that allows me to choose phono preamps or not.
Cheers,
Steve

ah that'll be it then! i suppose mixvibes software has a soft preamp, i found a phono preamp in my box of equipment, problem solved. i was trying to get the mic channel working but i didn't figure that out either. is the mic working on your u46? i have a feeling it needs some driver magic before it starts to work. ewan.

Hi Steve
Quick question regarding the U46 - how do you turn the playthrough off in Ubuntu??
If I have something plugged into the inputs, I can hear it before I do any connecting in Jack. I only want to hear the inputs when I've connected it to whatever software I'm sending the signal to using Jack.
Any idea?
Phil

Where do you hear it? From the Headphone jack at the U46? It is a mixed output Otherwise check the jack config, everything can be routed in there. Cheers, Steve

Ah, that's interesting... I'm more used to using this device with a Mac and you can turn the constant playthrough/mix through the headphones off with that. You're quite right though... problem solved.
Just out of interest, what sort of latency are you getting with yours? Mine's quite high, something like half a second. Would you mind sharing how you have your Priority / Frames / Periods?
Thanks for your help, much appreciated.
