Must be something else going on. Do you have some more details as to what is going on (e.g. do you have the video enabled).

WIKIPEDIA
MPEG-4 Part 14 or MP4 is a digital multimedia format most commonly used to store video and audio, but can also be used to store other data such as subtitles and still images.[1] Like most modern container formats, it allows streaming over the Internet. The only official filename extension for MPEG-4 Part 14 files is .mp4, but many have other extensions, most commonly .m4a and .m4p. M4A (audio only) is often compressed using AAC encoding (lossy), but can also be in Apple Lossless format. M4P is a protected format which employs DRM technology to restrict copying. MPEG-4 Part 14 (formally ISO/IEC 14496-14:2003) is a standard specified as a part of MPEG-4.

yes, the video is enabled.

I get 'unexpected error' popup when I try to load MPEG-4 Audio (.m4a)
If I use [Files] option to navigate to directory to list files within Cross. The .m4a file does not display, but other .mp4 will display.

I can load with no error MP4 Video (.mp4)

It has been quite a while file types were mal behaving. I might be wrong but think .m4a are iTunes and have a fair chance of being ďrm protected.
Just maybe installing iTunes might help. Make sure Cross is closed when doing this.
If you have iTunes and it doesn't work you need someone more knowledgeable to help you out.
