Youtube Videos - Legal use on Gigs?

Postby bostonDJ on 05 Jan 2014, 03:51

Hello all & Happy New Year,

I have been building a library of video 'visuals' using Flash and mp4's on the Vfx Control and have had success via looping. I want to now build my music video library for use on gigs...classics, 80's, 90's 2000's, Latin, Hip Hop/Urban, EDM, etc....

My question is...Is using Youtube videos to accomplish this illegal? I have been on many legal/lawyer sites along with our rivals Serato site...lol...and I read that it is up to the venue/club/restaurant to pay for music licensing. In other words the club would be the legal umbrella under which we as DJ's, (mobile), would fall under and be legally covered. It seems to be a fine line but are we exempt from paying any licensing fee being mobile DJ's? Can we convert and use Youtube videos legally? (Not my own re-mixes but straight ahead video conversons ex. a Van Halen video or Sinatra classic)

If not, is it a legally viable option to use videos from sites/companies like VJ-Pro and Promo Only?

If yes then which company offers the most bang for your buck with good quality video that works on Vfx?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks a lot and lets have a great 2014!!

Thank you very much 'wazza' for the great link. Very good material and ideas there regarding the mini-cam. I like that idea. I have briefly checked out VJ-Pro & Promo Only. In your estimation does VJ-Pro sound & work better than Promo Only music videos? I only ask because there is a difference in monthly cost $$.

Also wazza, would you mind if I private messaged you to talk very briefly about the Adobe Flash file aspect on the Vfx? I would appreciate it.

Thanks again... :)
