Laptop specs to rip vinyl using u-mix-44

Hi
Jut starting to get things ready to move all my records onto the computer and have bought the u-mix44 as my laptop soundcard is not really suitable.
To confirm I am just going straight from the Technics 1210 to input 1 on the U-Mix44 and from there to the laptop via USB straight into Audacity.
The laptop is now running windows 7 (upgraded from Vista via fresh install). with setting as from control panel:
Processor Genuine Intel(r) CPU T2080 @ 1.73GHz 1.73GHz
Installed memory RAM 2.00GB
32 Bit operating system
USB 1
The levels in Audacity are really low and even putting all level up to 100% in Audacity and recording devices in Windows it is really low still. The sound also seems to stutter every now and again as if it catches up with itself.
I have tried using my phone to play into U-Mix and then the levels are just under -6db in audacity but it still stutters.
I have tried it on a new PC (my phone at this stage as not too comfortable balancing a 1210 on the desk with a child around) and the levels seem much better.
Also in mixvibes vinyl ripper it does not recognise that any inputs are detected at all yet Audacity does.
Really stuck on what to test on the laptop next, perhaps the USB 1 may have some part to play in this?
Any advice would be most appreciated and sorry if this is not in the correct place but I cannot see anything related to this scenario.
Thanks in advance
Andy
