Inexpensive (or free) mix software unlike CrossDJ

Postby loudsubz on 10 Mar 2013, 18:32

Looking for recommendations on some inexpensive (or free) on software to do some mixes with that don't require you to record the mix live, something where you can do all the chopping, mixing, and layout of the tracks in the software and just record based on how the tracks are layed out, sort of like video editing.

Sometimes I like to make some short 3-4 song mixes for gigs but don't always want to bust out the controller and do the mix live, but rather just perfect the mix in a simple layout so I can line everything up and just record it directly to mp3.

I have used Cool Edit Pro a long time ago but it was somewhat limited.

One word - Mixmeister!

A real DJ will do live stuff though, and you can't beat Cross for that, so join us! :D

Trust me - an audience will enjoy live mixes rather than pre-made ones. ;)

MixMeister works on OS X 10.6 and earlier. As of OS X 10.7 it's broken and crashes unexpectedly.

I know it was still working through Windows 7.

It will do EXACTLY what you're looking for. However, the problem is that InMusic/Numark has basically abandoned the product so it's future is questionable at best. However, MixMeister Fusion is the only product that let's you do this live.

If you want to do it to create a mix but not do it live, you can do it with Mixed In Key's Mashup. The features aren't quite as rich as MixMeister but it's a new product so I expect MIK to be doing some more work on it in the future.

Of course, you can do what you're wanting to with Ableton, but that's pretty pricey. For that matter, MixMeister Fusion is pricey, MixMeister Studio isn't as pricey, but still up there, and then MixMeister Express is much cheaper... but you start sacrificing features.

MIK Mashup on the other hand is pretty inexpensive....

Ableton ? Acid ?
If you want something free, I guess Audacity could do it (multi-track).

I did a mashup in Audacity, and it was very good :)

I just use Ableton.

Audacity is fine for working with raw audio, but lacks the beat markers and other features like 'warping' tracks that MixMeister and Ableton have (and Torq for that matter ;) ).

I use Audacity quite often for editing, tracks, cleaning things up, etc - but for mixing two songs, it's not 'easy' by any means because it lacks the functionality found in most applications that are DJ centric.

I'm exactly the same! :D

If you can get Mixmeister, I'm sure that you'll have lots of fun, and also create some great mixes. It's got loads of features for putting mixes together, but live mixes still get an audience on their feet!
