Just brought 2 1TB Western Digital external hard drives yesterday. I'll be using 1 for my gigs and the other will be used as Back up.

I'll be loading these drives up today from my existing gig drive.

Is there a quicker way of transferring my files to my these new drives as I just normally use Copy/Paste.

It's going to take about 6 hours to do both

also use a western external drive for back up ,, except want it to back up everthing on computer ,, use the installed software to get it to back up everthing,, doesnt take that lomg olny backing up a 100gig on a 300gig drive,, hopefully i not wasting my time by doing it wrong

6 hours seems a bit long, how much do you copy?

Full backup usually takes 30-45minutes for me, but I only have around 250-300GB on my laptops.

It normally takes me about 3 hours for about 450 gigs. But I have 2 drives to do today.

I'll be copying from external to external, whether that slows the process down a tab I couldn't tell you. I've always kept my music files on a external drive.

In the future, if you're on a PC, use Allway Sync. Cost is about $20 and it takes care of everything.

In the future, if you make changes to one drive they will propagate to the other - sending on the deltas (the changes). That means that if you change an MP3 file's ID3V2 header then it will copy that file but not anything that's changed. There are other products that work similarly, including SyncToy from Microsoft (unsupported) but Allway Sync is actually quite a bit faster.

If you're on Mac, try using rSync - it's built right into the operating system. It's a bit of a nightmare for some people because it's a command line tool but there are multiple GUI front ends for it available that make it much easier to use.

In the future, if you want to move that much data, consider pulling the drive out of the enclosure and putting it in a desktop on a SATA connection. It will take a LOT less time... unfortunately, it may negate the warranty in the process as well.

I used carbon copy on Mac, worked quite well.

To speed things up, a tool is possibly the best way, but e-Sata or USB3.0 drives will make quite a difference as well.

Or even Firewire 800.

I´d love to have a firewire interface as well, but asides Apple and some $$$ business notebooks, firewire ports are really hard to find
