How do you prepare/create a mix?

Ok, so a little pubble in the water...

I'm making a mix now, preparing, finding tracks to fit the COMPOSITION, and I'm doing this for one or two weeks. It is a little bit of artistic approach, to make tiny pieces together to make a full composition.

But that is my way:

My question for you out there is:

How do you prepare and create a mix? What are the general thoughts, ideas, and so on!

I mainly want discussions about mixes that you upload or create yourself, but you can talk about gig mixes.

DON'T JUST PRESS PLAY!
SPREAD YOUR WAY!

Even if analog or digital I start with prog house/tech house records with melodies, after that there are the ones with a bit tougher sound and in the back of my crate (physically) there are the techno records. Digitally I am doing the same thing ;) It depends on the time I am already spinning and the atmosphere in the club which records I play.
