New to the DJ experience

Hello All!

Just picked up my ION discover DJ mixer and I'm a little overwhelmed.

I've never had experience with DJ equipment in the past and some of the terminology for the controls are just over my head...That said, can anyone help me out?
Can't seem to configure my setting correctly, with regards to my head phones. Should I be able to listen to deck A in my head phones while deck B is playing through my computer speakers?

Anyone know of a basic "DJ for dummies" tutorial or hyperlink I can reference to get me started?

Any help is very much appreicated!

Regards

I've just had a quick search and found these three sites. I'm not sure how good they are, but they seem okay at first impression.

Also, in answer to your question about headphones - yes, it is normal to be able to listen to one deck while the other is playing music through the speakers. Depending on your computer system, you may need to get an external soundcard (if you are using a laptop).

To get started - pick two songs that sound very familiar to you. Check that they are the same bpm (or very close) and try to mix them together.

You'll find that many songs have parts that are ideal for mixing in the next song - but NEVER try to mix over vocals - it never sounds good! Look for the bridge or instrumental break and experiment at that point. Of course, dance music is probably the best type of music to mix - in my experience, house music is best (but I love house, so I would say that!).

When starting out as a mix DJ, I found that songs that were in-between 125-130bpm were the easist to beatmatch. Once you've mastered that range you can be creative and do slower or faster mixes that will drive your audience wild!

The best advice I can give though, is start with the music you know really well, and practice lots.

I wish you the best of luck...

Kevin

Also I suggest this youtube chanel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/ellaskins

He is also named as DJ Tutor, and he has nice, clear tutorials. He has pretty long and funny vids, so I suggest you to check them out.

I learned a lot from those vids :)

(tipp: try older videos, and Practice 'n Enjoy ;) )
