Going Mobile! Need Some Advice...

Postby KevMaverick on 03 Feb 2012, 02:33

I've made a big decision - I'm going back on the road to do mobile gigs. :D

Much of my work is in the week, so that leaves me with Fridays and Saturdays free, so I thought that I might go back to doing parties (weddings, retirements, 21st's 18th's etc).

Let's face it - that is where good money can be made! I know that, coz it's where I started...

Now to the problem! I have no idea about what gear to buy. Do I get a pair of powered speakers with built-in amplifiers, or should I buy a power amp and some passive speakers?

There's also the issue of lighting and effects! This is both scary and very exciting to me! I can't wait to get out there! I need good advice here my friends.

As a ps. I do have one big massive bonus - the fact that a local social club wants me to be their resident DJ, for one gig every month. To prove their loyalty they have offered me a place on the committee AND a generous loan to buy the equipment I need...

Anyone else here do mobile gigs?
Summer is here! Only 4 things we need - cold beer, hot ladies, loud music, and more cold beer!

Storage = no problem. I have a large garage attached to my house.

Transport = no problem - large vehicle for my use at all times. :D

I'm just not sure as to the gear to buy...do I go with the separate amp and speakers, or should I play safe and buy a pair of speakers with built-in amps?

The rig I've seen and quite liked has a pair of 12" bass drivers, 300w each, and on each there is an output to drive another speaker at the same output, making it 600w each side, or even better, 300w on stands, and 2x300w bass sub-woofers! This sounds like a bargain to me at £200... :D

Hey,

Yes Jim you are right I'm mobile DJ and have gear.

Generell I'm not a fan of cheap sound equipment. I know from some parties and friend who are using very cheap gear (like 300W aktive 15" full range speaker for 200€) that it is broken very fast after a few parties or sounds not good.
Gemerell speakers should be tested before buying ;) Go to the store with a cd your fav. Music and test the speaker you want to buy.

sound aktiv vs passive. Aktive most expensive but need not as big space like the passive speakers. Passive needs space for speakers and the case with the amplifiers.
When you want to run passive Tops and a sub or two you need two amplifiers one for the tops and one for the subs. You also need a controller which devide the frequency to the both amplifiers.
aktive systems have their own freq. dividers in the power unit.

I use currently an aktive passive system. Passive 300Wrms Fullrange top speakers and and active Bass.
Currently I'm waiting to get the money to buy two nice aktive top speakers to get a Slim System.
I use a QSC gx3 amplifier with two Wharfedale Pro EVP-x15 speakers. Some information about speaker vs amplifier:
You should take a amplifier which has enough power to use the speakers. The amplifier should have more power than the speakers could official get and use. This has two aspects:
First the amplifier will not run at the end of its power and will not be broken as far and the amplifier will not be very hot.
Second the sound is better because it will not clip and the Distortion will not as big like when running on maximum.

aktive systems most have bigger amplifiers than the speaker could work with to get minimum distortion.
I currently prefer the QSC K-Series because they are slim and have enough power but they are really expensive. I currently use an QSC Ksub as my Bass fundament and it is very loud for mid areas.

there is the third thing you have to calculate: the size of the party location. For bigger rooms you need bigger gear and a single 15 or 18" bass will power more than like a smal band bass.

If you have more detailed question about a point, post it here I will answer with my knowledge of party's.
The light
And some details about light and also sound will come when I'm home and have a keyboard and not my iPhone keyboard.

So keep up I will update here.

Regards
Christian

Thank you Christian, your advice is very welcome - and very good!

I've seen and heard quite a lot of these active speaker systems and I have to say that they sound good. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to go with the 12" active top speakers, as they are quite powerful enough, and a separate bass sub. This will make quite a nice sounding, yet compact system.

I would be interested to hear your advice about lighting - there is so much to choose from!

Hey,

so part 2 now the Light:
Generell Light is like the sound, you can choose thousands of different products.
Some generall aspects:
I often hear from the older generation when they book me if I have some classic lights. Classic lights are for them the PAR-56 or PAR-64 Spots with 300W or 500W lamps and color filters in front of it. This is a real classic set to have some of them but with 500W PAR-lamps is not modern today. They are to warm and broken after 150hours of running (sometimes less ;)) and you have to wait after the show up to the point the lamps are not as hot that you can put them away.
So if you need the classic light and I also have them I prefere to the classic version but with the modern LED technology.
For smal areas it is enough to have 4 of them. (in the past I run with 4x 56Par and a very heavy dimmerpack and now I have a Bar with 4 LED Cans and it is very slim and the light is brilliant.)

These classic light is very basic and with the modern technology DMX and LED you can run thousands of different shows and create effects like can-can or Strobe.

For parties with the of recent date people like 18 to 30 they want more than these classic lights. For those you can use effects.

Effects can be the expensive ones and the cheaper variants.
For me for example I have both. Its easier to create a nice setup of light with a range of different effects and devices.
Some classic devices are the Moonflower or the Zig-Zag (both aviable from Eurolight which are cheap and good quality). These are effects which are beam different ligh rays in different colors through the room and they are rotating with the BASS
These are the cheapes ones and aviable for round 50 to 100 (also now aviable with LED and DMX interface so you can now manage how it rotates and so on really nice but I currently not ordered some of them but I saw them at the local store)

The expensive version is to buy Scanners or movingheads. With like two scanners you can create nice Effects and with combination of fog you have a very nice light show. They are also controllable with DMX. Scanners are also now aviable with LED technology but I have currently not tested how good they are. I had for my last gig a movinghead from Showtec (Showtec Indigo 4500) this is a very nice device. Small and powerfull (light and equipment of the system).
Generall with scanners and movingheads they have different equipment (colors, gobos, Gobo rotation, prisma, dmx focus and so on) here you get often that what you pay so if you want a system with all the functions you will pay much but you will have a nice system to create effects.

So I told that most of the equipment of light is now aviable with DMX. DMX is not as modern as some peaple thought but it is nice and easy to use.
You have classic 512DMX channels. Every device with DMX has a number of channels like a Scanner or movinghead 6 - 16 channels. You set on every device the start-adress. This start-adress is for the device the information on which channel it will wait for your information. Like start-Adress 0 and the device has 4 channels (LED PAR): you have then blocked 4 channels. The next device can run at channel 5 and so on.
You can also set more devices to the same channel so they are all doing the same. With much LEDs or Movingheads or Scanners you create with that nice effects.

All in all it depends on what you want to do with the light. Is it only for classic lightning the dancefloor with the classic lights you will only need the PARs (4 to 8 depends on the size of the area, for very big areas more ;)).
For more light (ordering me you can choose Light/Light+ Packages and so on) Use Effects (set to the center) and Scanners or movingheads (at the end of the floors to get a big range of movement of the scanners).

What I not named up to now was where you want to setup the light. For that you need stands or Truss. Truss is the very expensive but looking nice variant ;). And stands is the cheaper and most flexible variant.

I will look to my photos and upload some and post them hear to give you some pictures about what I mean. The party stands and falls with the light and also sound but most the light.

regards
Christian

All I need then is for about six volunteers to wave them around to the sound of the music!

Christian, I've been to a few gigs where the DJ has used smoke with a lazer or two - that creates a great effect and people love the atmosphere it creates. I'd already decided on a couple of moonflower units, but I didn't consider the par lamps - that is a great idea! LED ones of course, I remember how hot the old ones used to get!

I'll take a look at the moving head effects - if I can find some at a reasonable price I might invest in some.

Thanks for all this advice - it really does help and I appreciate it very much.

I not named and discussed the Laser because at germany we have to call an department to test the lasers for every show setup. We have very strict construction to run lasers. You need like a driver licence to run lasers and then you have to pay round 200€ for every party to setup up it with an officer from the department.
If you run them illegal and the police comes to for a control you have to pay a big sentence.
I have a licance to run them but it is to expensive for me to run them on small partys and the clients are often not prepared to pay these extra costs.

But I agree totaly that lasers create nice effects ;) with fog. I also use often Fog machines. (I have a big 1500W, 680m³ Fog per Minute   )
