Newbie to forum and software...NEED HELP

Hi all,

Just joined up after purchasing the ION Discover DJ and the Mixvibes software came with it. My name is Carl and I have only really messed about and have a play, nothing serious.

I live in the West Midlands, so I see someone has not long joined localish too.

Have been playing with the software and so far so good. I am a bit new to it all though, used to have a couple of cd mixers I used to have a play on every now and then a good few years ago.

As most music is on my computer now I decided to get something cheap to start off with, so I can have another go.

I discovered that you were not able to listen to a song before cueing it having only one soundcard built into the Mac. So I have purchased a USB soundcard that has some inputs and outputs that will hopefully help. It has Mic in, Line In, Front Out, Rear Out, CEN/Bass out, SPDIF In and SPDIF Out.

My trouble is I am having problems setting up the settings, I seemed to of tried everything to get it working but so far nothing.

I am not bothered which way round I get it, best way would be for me to listen to cueing music through the laptop and use the USB soundcard for external to speakers.

Having being a noob I have no idea what I am doing set up wise, any help would be appreciated.

I purchased the soundcard from eBay, the one below

After purchasing the soundcard I came across when looking at some headphones, the Numark PHX USB headphones. Would these of been a better and simpler option to go for?

Any help gratefully received

Well so far I still haven't had any luck :(

I followed the guide posted to combine sound cards, but I still can't configure the software to do what I want it to do.

I am thinking about the Numark headphones will make it easier?

What else do you need to know?

I did actually get it working, I have the headphones coming out one of the soundcard ports and the main was coming from the macbook.

However when I plug the speaker or output in the headphones on the laptop it plays everything.

I have tried to swap it around but this doesn't seem to work

The reason I was on about the Numark headphones is that they are USB ones.

Strange coincidence there N77, not only are we both from West Midlands, but I bought the exact same soundcard! I've used it live and the sound quality is excellent for such an inexpensive bit of equipment.

Even though I run Windows systems, I'm pretty sure that you will have some success like I did.

I set the external soundcard up with 4 channel input and 4 channel output. The computer sees this as front and rear speakers. I set up Cross DJ to use the main output from the front, and the headphones from the rear (the connections on the external unit). Set the usb soundcard up and see if it recognises the multiple channels. If it does, then your heading in the right direction.

Try not to combine two soundcards if possible - that caused no end of problems for me. Everything was totally out of sync and mixing was impossible!

btw - make sure that you have not got the digital outputs enabled on the external soundcard - that sounded terrible!

^Thanks Daniel.

Also, I've just had a thought. If you set the external sound card up as 6 channel, that gives you an extra channel for a monitor speaker etc. I find this useful if your main mix is going through any kind of external processor/mixer before reaching the speakers.

I've found that it can cause problems in such a situation - only a slight delay, but annoying and confusing. Better to have a monitor of your output DIRECTLY from your computer. Much more accurate.
