I was surprised to learn that the U46mk2 is listed as discontinued by several online vendors, and I notice that the U-Mix44 is the only available option in the webshop here...

Am I correct in assuming that the U46mk2 is a better quality soundcard compared to the U-Mix44? If so, why is it discontinued and has another interface been announced to replace it?

Hello, i know that both soundcards are still available. An to answer at your question, the U46mk2 is much better and has much more features than the U-Mix44!

The U46MKII is a better sound card and versatile to boot. Besides having a pretty low latency compared to a couple of Firewire sound cards out there, it is also fairly decent for production. I was able to use it to record vocals with good results and I use it with Amplitube3 to practice bass in my room in private. If you can get your hands on that instead of the U44Mix I recommend it.
