Does sunlight harm vinyl?

Postby indmix on 06 Mar 2011, 14:27

Because my turntables are right under my window and usually the sunlight falls directly on them while playing (i cover them afterwards)

Ive never had the fun of using vinyl, but i would say yes it would harm them, a simple reason would be heat and warping from sunlight depending on time left in sunlight and how hot it was within that time!

bottom line if your really worried i would move your rig to a more suitable place!

Normal sunlight would not harm or damage vinyl (unless it's strong) but heat generated by the sunlight passing though glass, for a example a window can really damage vinyl and cause it to warp quite quickly.

I once placed a old, scratched 12" vinyl against a warm radiator just to see what would happen. It only took the vinyl 2 hours for it to start to warp.

One last doubt, does this also rule for timecode vinyls or only for the traditional ones? And if so, then
1. do both sides get warped?
2. can just a little heat cause warping? Because i was planning to move it this weekend because i'll have to reconnect all cables etc and it's a 'big' job (feeling a little lazy  ) and i didn't except the sun to shine this much today. A little heat touched the vinyls, which were covered by a cloth, for quite a while (+-3hours) . How do i know if it warped or not? I cannot hear any immediate difference..

I enjoy mixing in the sun

it´s warm and if you´re records are warped before you can easily unwarp them because they are warmed up.
Vinyl wont warp placed on a flat surface and exposed to sunlight,
unless it´s poorly cut and has tension in it.

dont fear, but enjoy the warmth young pada-wan
