Im with Steve - my ASUS has been bulletproof for reliability, and i think it has to do with the quality of components, and quality control @ the factory before they send them out the door. You may pay a little more, but its better than having to buy another laptop to replace the dead one, and paying more than what you would of in the first place. Get it right the first time! Hard to get tight tolerances for manufacture in china sometimes.
In saying that, i also had a toshiba that served me well with DVS for many years...
One Word -
RESEARCH I spend lots of time finding out about any product before i commit to my hard earned cash to a product.
I hope your PC works for ages Kev, J-kut and anyone else on the HP 'Ship'.
Just so hard when sometimes with compatibility issues; as for this example~~ Apple make software for Apple products; where with PCs, there are infinite 3rd party manufacturers- same goes for the Andriod system and iPhone comparisons. Just opens up a huge can of worms for what works for one sometimes will not work for another.
Thats something i admire in Apple products to a degree; the control over their products to an extent (i cant believe i just said that

)!!
Ps i am not an Apple fan if you didnt notice, nor do i work for the bastards

There are a few that are quite good on the market, but it all depends on your personal choice; but i think the general rule of thumb is 'always get more than you think you will need'. I really cant give u a recommend because what is good for one, may not be for the other...might have to read a few reviews...
i would avoid the new 'ultra book' styles for the moment, as they are still first generation, and its not nice to be a 'hamster'(guinea pig) for companies. The smaller and more powerfull it is, the more you pay ( and probably more to fix it if something goes wrong). Hope this helps someone
Cheers
