That's the kind of questions we have in mind when we follow the American way of life from a French point of view. fromages....jpg

I certainly AM a big fan of cheese, but I HATE guns! I'm not one of those small minded people, however, who think that ALL guns should be destroyed. Of course the police, the military, security forces all need guns, but should the public be allowed to build huge collections of deadly weapons? I think not. Why on earth would an ordinary person need an automatic, or semi-automatic weapon that can fire numerous rounds per minute? For protection? Against what - a stampede? They are ASSAULT weapons - for ATTACKING! I'm sorry to say, and don't want to upset any of our American members, that the problem lies with the government, for allowing people to own such weapons. I am not against people owning small handguns for protection, but assault weapons are totally unnecessary. So I'm not 100% against guns, we still need them, but I still prefer cheese!
Summer is here! Only 4 things we need - cold beer, hot ladies, loud music, and more cold beer! My only comments are in some places it makes sense - in others, not so much.
For example, I lived in rural Alaska where they have a saying, "Step off the plane and into the food chain."
While assault weapons are over the top in that environment, it makes sense to have large caliber handguns and rifles available. Something that will stop a charging bear who views you as dinner in it's tracks for example. Or even worse, a pissed off moose.
However, in an urban environment the need for these sorts of guns isn't the same...
The fear for most people is that if they take assault weapons then everything else is next by simply expanding the law. And many states already have a ban in effect on assault weapons without any consideration. For example in California an Olympic biathlon athlete (where they ski and shoot) had a weapon that had a ban on it, but it was his weapon he used for the sole purpose of his event. A California politician said, 'If he wants to keep his gun he can move to Texas.' This wasn't a cheap AR15 knock off, this was a $25,000 competition class rifle used for these sorts of events and they wanted him to bring it down, turn it in, and have it destroyed.
The problem is that when most people talk about stuff like this they throw reason right out the window and draw a line in the sand out of fear.
