KevMaverick <<- Feel free to pass on any karaoke wisdom you might have too. I'm doing my first karaoke gig on wednesday night. I'm nervous as hell.

 dont be scarred   the first thing you will realise that karoke is not mainly about the music,,its about the personality that you show the crowd,,you will still have to love the music,,but how you interact with the crowd sells the music and the atsomesphere :!: just the way you build a music set to influnence the emotion felt by the crowd  part of that has to transport with how you interact  my last thought is to be confortable and enjoy yourself  let us know how it goes

Good words Daniel! :D

I know I complain about karaoke sometimes, but mostly it's lots of fun! Just be yourself, and have a great time.

Oh, just remember, that you may get good singers, but also a few bad ones! - treat everyone the same! They all deserve their applause for getting up to sing in the first place. Treat them as if they're all brilliant, even if they aren't!

One good piece of advice - be fair. Don't let anyone 'gatecrash' the karaoke - I always keep it strictly in the order in which I receive the requests. Quite often you'll get someone who has had a few drinks too many, trying to be the next singer. Don't let them do that, as it upsets the people who have been waiting their turn.

Lastly, don't worry too much about the background music - I usually put a playlist together and let it autoplay - you can always fit a certain song or two in the list if you get requests for non-karaoke songs.

Just one more thing - if someone is so bad that you need to laugh - run and hide somewhere! I had a singer once who was just about the worst ever, and the audience was laughing - so I couldn't help myself! The person threw the microphone at me and stormed out of the bar! Of course, this set the audience off even more!

Best of luck - have a great night, and let us know how it goes. ;)
Summer is here! Only 4 things we need - cold beer, hot ladies, loud music, and more cold beer!

Thanks for the input guys. To be honest, it's not the crowd interaction or them singing badly that's got my nerves going. It's my own singing that's got to me. I'll obviously have to do a song or two to get things flowing - I don't even sing in the shower  It was either I do karaoke or loose my wednesday night to someone else. I have a friend who has been doing karaoke for the last 20yrs, he agreed to hire out his second rig to me along with a massive collection of music. Sadly I can't hire his voice too! I'll definitely take all your advice though. The last time I was at a karaoke night, I can barely remember more than the first hour. Let's just say it took a LOT to get me up & singing. I guess in this line of work, there are times we just have to step out our comfort zone. Thanks again - I'll let you know how it goes.
